CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Herb woke bright and early the next morning to drop the cookies off at their church before heading into the bakery. The sun was barely visible as he drove the quick ten-minute drive into town. As he passed his daughterâs home, the Fraser fir shone brightly through the window he knew was the formal living room of the grand colonial. Even though heâd remind Faith or Nick they shouldnât leave the lights on all night on a live tree, he had to stop and take in its beauty. The lights on the front of the home glowed in the misty Saturday morning. Dark green wreaths suspended by red ribbon hung perfectly centered on every window lined up in rows on the two-story home.
He was proud of his daughter and impressed by the quick turnaround of his son-in-law. Their children, even though not quite old enough this year, would have special holiday memories in their classic Tinsel home.
Herb continued his journey. The preacher met him at the fellowship hall entrance. Already more than twenty or thirty boxes of cookies were stacked neatly along the foldout tables ready for the nightâs big party. Being a baker most of his life, the excitement to try otherâs recipes would make the day go by faster.
âMorning,â Kris said when his father walked in the bakery. âI have some red velvet cupcakes, cranberry scones, and chocolate muffins in the oven. Do you mind if I take a half day off after lunch?â
âNoel?â
Krisâs face went beet red. âI wanted to take her shopping for the girlsâ Christmas presents.â
His father wasnât so sure that was the real reason, but it wasnât his place to pry. âI can call Harmony to see if she can come in. Now that schoolâs out, she doesnât need to sit around the house doing nothing. Better yet, if your mother isnât too busy, Iâm sure sheâd love to come in for a while.â
He thanked his father and bounced back into the kitchen.
âGood morning, Herb,â Nick greeted his father-in-law once the bakery was open for business. âThought Iâd stop by and see if you had any of those chocolate muffins ready.â
âComing out of the oven in a few minutes. I did want to warn you about leaving the lights on all night with a live tree, though.â Herb couldnât live with himself if he said nothing.
Nick nodded and thanked him but showed no emotion. He waited for the muffins to come out and ordered a black coffee to go.
After being scolded by his father-in-law, Nickâs day went straight downhill from there. The womenâs bathroom overflowed. When he called the plumber, unfortunately his part of the conversation would have made the devil blush. Then, just when he thought things couldnât get any worse, the cash register decided not to work. His afternoon consisted of training the help on how to actually count out change instead of reading it on the screen.
With only an hour left until he closed up for the weekend, a group of women came in with their children and apparently forgot they had the little stinkers.
